This antique teak chest is a masterclass in layered Indian carving tradition. Three distinct bands tell three different stories across its front face — a continuous acanthus scroll along the top, a grid of individually carved tile squares in the middle each holding its own motif of rosettes, stars and tulips with traces of original turquoise paint still sitting in the recesses, and a bold geometric diamond lattice anchoring the base. Four thick square legs carved with circular medallions carry it all with quiet strength. The warm teak lid shows every year of honest use. Raw, real and utterly irreplaceable.
